Brent's Story

Kokoda was a life changing experience, The Australian history of the track allowed an insight into the struggles that our troops face but also the mateship and sacrifice evident. The trek was a real fitness challenge for myself but the sense of accomplishment and pride I can place in myself makes it all worth while. The people I trekked with had become like a family and the experiences between these 13 people I will never forget. The trek was always enjoyable and made me realise how far I could push myself. The trek meant a lot as I was able to gain an insight into the sacrifices and endurance our troops went through in order to protect Australia. Coming across many significant places in the battle for Kokoda for many troops, but specifically Butch and Stan. The history behind the track in inspiring and I encourage anybody who gets the chance to experience it for themselves. The locals, specifically the porters Avuari were incredible always there to help on the track but also to share the experience with, they were kindest people I had come across and always had a smile despite their conditions. One specific moment during the trek that left a standout impact on me was climbing brigade hill after a tough prior day, seeing the steepness of the sides that were climbed and even just knowing that where we stood so many Australians lives were lost left a huge impact.
