Philip's Story

My father joined the Irish Army at the outbreak of WWII as a 21 year old farming boy, never out of his home town. I was struck by the similarity with the soldiers who fought on the Track, an average age of 21, still just boys really. It gave me a new found sense of respect for these diggers and also for my father, I did not know him as a 21 year old & now I have to rethink him.
That night at Isurava, following Aidan’s story of the battle, I felt my fathers presence, a warm comforting sense of being close to him and talking with him about all those military stories we shared during my childhood. He died in 2006 but was very close to me that night.
