Nikki's Story

Sometimes you go through events or experiences in life that have a massive impact or resonate with you for the rest of your life. For me, April 2017, Kokoda did just that.

Trekking Kokoda through Australian Kokoda Tours for the 75th Anniversary was a dream come true. Its something I have talked about doing with my dad since I was quite young; At times it was physically, mentally and emotionally challenging and nothing can prepare you for Kokoda, but Kokoda itself.

Walking in the footsteps of history doesn’t closely compare to what our diggers experienced in 1942, but they are in our history books and memories as being brave courageous and inspirational young men & women and in vein died, so that we may live. Their COURAGE, MATESHIP, ENDURANCE and SACRIFICE lives on forever.

To Mick O’Malley and all his team at Australian Kokoda Tours, at home and in PNG, the little bit of extra special moments we had, made it so much more real..to walking off the beaten track – seeing and hearing the stories of the brave soldiers, listening to podcasts of those who made it home and had to live with those memories, day in and day out… Mick, setting the scene on his knowledge, passion and history for the track, was just incredible.
The Porters, whom you honestly couldn’t do it without them, their encouragement and knowledge to be there with you every step of the way and lending a hand, is what friends do – thats exactly what they are and they become your family for a week – always smiling and having fun…

To my fellow trekkers, whom came from all over Australia – we laughed, sweated, persevered, the passion and energy and fun we all shared – I wouldn’t have wanted to do it without them and for me Illustrates a journey that has gone well beyond my expectations and I have made friends for life.

To finish off the tour at Bomana Cemetery on the 75th Anniversary on Anzac Day, such a significant day in our country and history was the icing on the cake. It was something I will never forget and I have the photos and memories that will live with me forever…

‘We Will Remember Them’…

Lest We Forget!!!
