Andrew's Story

I am not a soldier, never have been and never will be, but I took the opportunity to be part of the Kokoda Historical and No Roads Expedition’s “Re-creation of History” trek from McDonalds Corner to Kokoda. This gave me a much better understanding of what it may have been like for our lads of the 39th Battalion who played a major role in protecting our country from possible invasion during WW2. Retracing their march 75-years to the day, wearing their uniform, webbing and pack, even leather soled boots and y-front underwear, eating similar food, walking with bare foot native porters in their traditional uniform and relying on their knowledge of where to gather safe drinking water, all added up to an unforgettable journey into the past. David Howell’s unfathomable knowledge of the Kokoda Track history and his ability to retell the events, underlined by the huge number of tomb stones at Bomana War Cemetery, gave me a much deeper and broader mental and physical appreciation of what the Kokoda campaign should mean to everyone living in Australia.
