Kim's Story

Kokoda was never on my bucket list and was something I never believed I was capable of doing. Twelve months ago that all changed.
Inspired by my grandfather, Lieutenant Donald Simonson MC, who fought on the track in the 39th Battalion and a desire for a personal challenge, I booked to do Kokoda.
My grandfather was never far from my thoughts as I undertook months of training at Mt Coot-tha and as I trekked across the Own Stanley Ranges.
The track lives up to its reputation; it is hard and relentless. I am so glad I did it though! The sense of accomplishment and pride I feel and the extraordinary memories I now have will last a life time. Visiting Deniki, where my grandfather won his Military Cross, was incredibly special and the feeling of walking through the arches at Owers Corner, after 8 days of hard trekking, indescribable.
The Kokoda Track is by no means easy but it is achievable (even for us normal, everyday folk). I encourage anyone considering doing it, whether for a personal challenge or out of respect for our Diggers, to just do it! It is an incredible experience!
Thank you to everyone at Back Track Adventures for making this possible.
