Jack's Story

As a Duke of Ed participant I was chosen to do the Kokoda trail as our major expedition. It was a 10 day excursion which saw us travelling from Sydney to Queensland then to PNG. Our head porters name was Ned who was very welcoming. The experience was absolutely life changing staying the nights in Iribaiwa, Nauro, Menari, Naduri among other villages on the trek. Never did I realise how tough PNG life was for these people. If we weren’t walking we were all siting down talking, eating and having a laugh as we grew closer as no longer friends but a family. Touch football games filled our spare time and out of 2 games between Australia and PNG and the series was tied at 1-1. The environment of the Kokoda trail is absolutely amazing with beautiful rivers running through it and providing us with a much needed cool down. The history of the trail had always been a story that I had heard but being there and seeing the memorial sights and also discussing all the stories made not only me but everyone very emotional.
The Kokoda trail was quite easily the best thing I have experienced and something I will never ever forget. The experiences and relationships that I have developed from this will stay with me forever.
